Introduction
Lora
EU_868 (LoRaWan) version/configuration and appropriate antenna/power settings versus a US 915 MHz device.
Map services
Uses
- Remote monitoring (weather, eg)
- GPS/location tracking
- Communication when the mobile network is unavailable: Hiking / wilderness
- Home automation / IoT
- Hiking and camping with several teams
Platforms
The applicable EU frequency, duty-cycle, power and equipment requirements depend on the actual device/configuration and antenna.
There are many ESP32-S3 boards with an SX1262 LoRa radio, including Heltec, LilyGo, RAK and others.
Seeed XIAO + Wio-SX1262, which support the 862–930 MHz range and have an external antenna connector.
A Heltec LoRa 32 V4 combines:
- ESP32-S3
- SX1262 LoRa
- Wi-Fi
- Bluetooth
- USB
- OLED
- battery management
- external LoRa antenna
Heltec MeshPocket, with an SX1262 LoRa radio, Bluetooth and a 5,000/10,000 mAh battery, specifically aimed at outdoor/off-grid use. The ThinkNode M1, which combines an SX1262, GPS, display and battery in a compact unit.
Transmission Power
Estonia's current rules:
- 863–868.6 MHz: up to 25 mW ERP (0.025 W) in the relevant SRD allocations.
- 868.7–869.2 MHz: 25 mW ERP (0.025 W).
- 869.4–869.65 MHz: up to 500 mW ERP (0.5 W) under specific conditions, including a 10% duty-cycle limit for the relevant allocation.
Other portions around 869.7–870 MHz have different limits.
The Estonian regulator TTJA confirms the 500 mW ERP allowance in 869.4–869.65 MHz and the 25 mW allowances in several other 863–869 MHz segments.

MQTT
MQTT can bridge a mesh to Internet-connected systems and even connect separate meshes.
